Keeping computers and networks running smoothly and cleanly is essential to a satisfying computing experience. In this age of Viruses, Trojans, Bots, Backdoor threats, Keyloggers, Spyware….it can seem very dangerous and threatening. Fortunately, it is actually quite simple to avoid many of these problems. The right software is a good start and good computing practices are a neccessity.

Being well organized with where you file your work, what you call each document and perhaps keeping previous versions – these are the basic building blocks of good computing practices and they’re done to varying degrees of skill by novices through to experts. Experts don’t always have the best habits either – you might be amazed at what we’ve had to fix.

Backups. Proper backups. Regularly done, regularly tested (so you know it actually works) and stored securely ’somewhere else’. Not on the same computer and not on a drive or discs stored in the same room. Disaster, loss and theft have a way of testing how well you’ve done all that and although we can often salvage lost files on your computer, without a proper backup system we cannot salvage lost computers.
